Test Run

I mentioned on Sunday in my Week “Eight” Weigh In that I was experiencing some hip/leg pain. I ran last Thursday and was fine. I am not sure what is causing the pain. If I was a betting person, I would think it is a sciatic nerve problem. It comes & goes. No real rhyme or reason. I notice it the most at night. Every time I try to roll over in bed it wakes me up. It has been discouraging because I haven’t been able to workout like I would like.
So today I knew that I was going to the Y. I figured I mgiht as well give a run a try. My 5K race will be right around the time we are probably going to be moving to our new house. Talk about chaos. So I want to be as ready for the race as I can and not be rushing to train.
It wasn’t necessarily a pleasant run but it wasn’t terribly painful. I didn’t want to push it and injure myself so I only ran two miles and not as fast as Thursday. So far so good. The true indication will be tonight when I try to sleep. I am being hopeful. I really do feel so much better after I run. I am ready for the time when I can be consistent in my running. Who would have thought that would be something I would look forward to……consistent running.

I started my wk 1 of Couch25K.. It really felt good to be running again.. I can’t wait until I can run the whole 5k without stopping.. I really miss running..

Kristen, I had the WORST sciatica with my pregnancy. It made walking uncomfortable and standing up after sitting a while, like 10 minutes, almost unbearable. After the girls were born, it miraculously went away…until today. Yikes, what a pain in the bottom. Literally. I did find that my chiropractor was able to give me some relief, if only for a couple of days after an adjustment. Try taking some Advil or Aleve to reduce the swelling of the nerve. (I could not take either while pregnant, but I am not above trying some tonight.)
I am ready to get released by the doctor so I can get back to more exercise. I will have to get back to the C25K program, and, perhaps, even finish it this time.
I hope you get some sleep tonight. I know how it feels to be in pain and not able to get a good night’s rest.

Kirsten, As some one that has had back pain for 40+ years I can tell you that it is sciatica. The best treatment is a chiropractor adjustment. A medical doctor will give you pain meds and muscle relaxers which only treat the pain not the cause. I would recommend a visit to a good chiropractor and tell him exactly where the pain is. You can also try to stretch it out yourself for some temporary relief: Lay on your back on the floor with legs out straight. Bend the leg on the painful side and turn that leg to the opposite side, across your body. Try to keep the rest of your body straight on the floor. Try to stretch over as far as you can and hold it for as long as you can. Bring it back and straighten it out. Repeat. You can try this several times and see if you get some relief. Also, Motrin will help with the inflammation. If you can tolerate it and you’re having severe pain (esp at night) take 800 mg. That is the dosage a doctor will prescribe. Don’t over use Ibuprofen as it will effect your stomach. Good Luck!! Don’t let it go too long because you can get permanent nerve damage.
If you have any questions, just let me know. I’ve been disabled with my back and neuropathy in my legs for years.
