A Child’s View of Running
Filed under Day to Day by kristen at 3:43 pm on Feb 04 2010
Every day when I pick up Megan from preschool she always asked what I did while she was at school. Almost always, I go to the Y. It is the only time I can guarantee that I will get in an uninterrupted workout. I was thrilled when I got there this morning (after attending my WW meeting) and there were open treadmills. Whohooooooooo.
Who would have ever thought that I would be excited that I could run. Anyway, I ran 5K at my fastest pace yet. I am not fast but I am trying to build up my speed as I work on my consistency. I do want it noted that my consistency in running USUALLY has nothing to do with me but with sick kids, appointments, no open treadmills etc.
So today Meg asked the same old question.
“What did you do while I was at school?”
“I went to WW and then to the Y.”
“Are you stinky?”
“Yes…..”
“Did you run?”
“Yes”
“How far?”
“Three miles (plus a little more but I figured the concept of a 5K would be lost on a three year old)”
“That isn’t very far?”
:::::::::::::::SILENCE:::::::::::::::::::::::::;
“Um, what do you think is far when you run, Megan?”
“60 miles”
Yes, I cannot even fathom running 60 miles at one time. I would be thrilled to have run 60 miles in a month. I am glad that my girls see me efforts to be healthy. As I write this post, Megan is practicing her running. She is running laps through the house. Good for her. Hopefully both my girls will develop a love of movement and activity and continue it throughout their life.
But as I was running those 3 miles it felt like 60 miles. I didn’t stop, I didn’t give up. I pushed my speed and kept my eye on the end.
