Running Again

Filed under Day to Day by kristen at 1:32 pm on May 12 2009

After the half marathon, I took some time off to let me body recover. There are many thoughts on how long to rest after running a half. I decided to get a deep muscle massage on Saturday. What bliss! I would love to get a massage every week if I could. I found out some interesting things from my massage. My left leg was more tight & sore than my right leg. My right hip was sore. It was explained to me that my right leg is probably stronger and my left leg is trying to compensate for it. Jules, the massage therapist, suggested more stretching for my left leg.

Yesterday was my first run. It felt good. I know that I have to be careful  not to up my mileage too quickly. I only ran 2 mile yesterday and 2.5 today. Today’s run was at a much faster pace.  Tomorrow, Meg & I are going to go to the Y. I would like to get on the elliptical to give my knees a day of rest.

We are leaving on vacation on Memorial Day. I cannot wait. It seems like we have been planning this vacation for ever. Chris just discovered while doing some research that we have a exercise room/facility in the same complex area that we will be staying. Yeah! We had already both planned on taking our running clothes with us. So I am hoping that I can get in some sort of run or time on a treadmill/elliptical every other day or so. I know that it will be a challenge for us both to get in the time.

So are you moving? Some sort of extra movement? A walk, a bike ride, some workout video, Wii Fit? Just move some more. I got my run in early this morning. It always amazes me how good I feel when I get movin’.

I try to walk at least 4 miles every day. I do an interval walk/jog which I love. I just wish it could do more for my belly. When I get home from work I am tired but I force myself. I could probably do a 1 mile walk/jog early AM but it is tough to get up do the workout and then go to work. I think I will give it a shot though. Congrats on back to running. Take it easy! I am a lifetime member of WW but gained some back. I have ten pounds to go to reach goal again.

Christine-That is awesome. I agree that sometimes we just have to force ourselves. Very early mornings can be challenging. I am trying to figure out how to get my runs in once summer starts. I am considering going for my run before my husband goes to work. So that means EARLY. We shall see.

    Keep up the great work!

Good for you for getting back with it! The last few years after the Indy Mini I would completely drop off from a consistent exercise regimen struggling to get maybe one or two runs in a week and even those were of poor quality and then in the fall/winter I would start training again. This year I really want to try to stay up with it, but I’m going to have to sign up for another race–I need to have something that will keep me on a plan. Last week I got a total of 15 miles as kind of a “recovery week” and then this past Monday night I ran 12.5 miles and felt pretty good. I think for me being over 40 the key is going to be to incorporate some x-training and weights (which I don’t do, but know I should!). Do you do weights/strength training?

If you decide to run the mini in Denver, remember it will be harder because of the altitude. The oxygen is less there so it will be harder to feel like you can get your breathe.
    Congratulations on your success!
