Serious Doubts

Filed under Day to Day by at 6:31 pm on Mar 29 2009

Well time has passed so quickly that my half marathon is quickly speeding towards me. I am scared silly. We are talking the first Saturday in May. How is that possible?

I have really struggled this weekend with my progress. I am trying not to be too hard on myself. I am just SO frustrated that I was running four miles in November and then had such a setback and am still not up to an easy four miles. Sure, it seemed like for several months everything was going wrong. I am not making excuses. But I am definitely not where I need to be right now to run 13.1 miles in just over a month.  To be honest I am struggling with feelings of failure. Back in late November/early December, I really really truly believed that I was going to be able to run the entire 13.1 miles. I was determined. Now, I am seriously doubting that that will happen. Lack of training is a huge problem. LOL.

Time is my biggest obstacle. Time without interruptions of a certain little girl is my biggest obstacle. So I am trying to figure out how to make this work.

So today I was determined to get in a “LONG” run. Long for me isn’t the long that I need to be at yet. But I did run 4 miles. There were a few brief periods of walking but I ran 4 miles. My tentative plan is to run 6 miles next weekend and 8 weekends the weekend after. Then I am going to try to figure out a plan for the next two weekends. I have been talking to Chris & getting his opinion. I am trying not to compare my times with his. (No, I am not competitive. HA!)

I am working to overcome the doubts. The doubts that have been plaguing me.  All I can do is my best. I know I will finish. I just don’t want to be the last one cross that finish line. Hehehe

Did you watch the Biggest Loser the day they were told to run the half marathon and nobody had running training??? I know it’s TV but they still weren’t as trained for running as you have been. Do your best!! That’s all anyone expects of you!! Don’t be so hard on yourself and don’t be putting those doubts in your head. Remember the “Little Train that Could—I think I can! I think I can! I think I can!” Walking some is not the end of the earth. I can’t even run 1/4 of a mile.

So, you are scheduled to run a half marathon in a few weeks. You are trying to overcome some serious setbacks and you are working hard. I think you are doing a superb job at keeping on going.

My advice, which is advice I received from my (much loved..HaHa) SIL is, make sure you can run half of the 13.1 miles, then run one mile, walk one mile, alternating until you finish the race. Most of us don’t run that much faster than we walk. (I walk fast at 3.8 MPH and run at 4.8) You will finish the race in about the same time, as our pace tends to slow the longer we run. You will not be the last person to finish, and SO WHAT IF YOU ARE??? You will have finished a half-marathon!!!!! Dude, that would TOTALLY rock!

Kristen, you CAN do this. You are capable of doing this. You are worthy of finishing a half-marathon. You WILL do this….

You know I ♥ you and if I was there I would totally kick your behind…right?

I walked in our (Murfreesboro TN) half marathon in October. My partner had serious health issues before we began. She heard that eating carbs was good for you so she ate from OLIVE GARDEN (OMG) needless to say we had to stop several times at the porta potties. I waited outside for her instead of walking ahead on my own.
She decided to drink gatorade instead of water like I did. She began to swell to where she couldn’t feel her fingers or wrists. I had her stop to rest a few times and had the EMTs check her.
We finished in 3 hrs and 48 mins. We were not at the top of the list but we finished and we finished ahead of a lot of others. Over 400 of those that started NEVER finished. We were quite proud of ourselves. A few years ago I would have never been able to walk 13.1. Thanks to WW I did walk it.
No harm in walking. If you have never ran or walked in one then take the time you do this year and try to improve on it next year. That is what we are going to do. OH, AND NO OLIVE GARDEN THE NIGHT BEFORE
