Craving a Candy Bar?
Filed under Food by kristen at 2:29 pm on Jan 07 2009
Monday night I had to make a quick run to the store to pick up a prescription and some much needed fresh vegetables. Since I was kid-free for the trip, I decided to make a few quick trips down the isles to see if I saw any new finds.
I was in the breakfast food isle when I saw a new product. Fiber Plus Antioxidants Chewy Bars by Kellogg. It was weird because there wasn’t a place for this. It was nice it was just dropped off and no one had made a place for it.
This bar touts 35% of your daily fiber plus antioxidants, vitamin E and zinc. I was just curious what it tasted like so I bought a box.
This isn’t a bar that I would suggest as a meal. The protein is very low in my opinion. Only 2 grams. I was craving something sweet yesterday afternoon. So this was a better choice than candy etc.
I bought the dark chocolate almond. Now, I cannot taste any almonds in it whatsoever. I don’t even see any almond pieces in it but that is fine. There is a good amount of chocolate. If you have tasted Fiber One’s Chewy Chocolate & Oats Bar, you will know how sweet it is. This isn’t as sweet and gooey. It is more of a chewy granola bar but it isn’t overly sweet like the Fiber One bar. So far this bar didn’t give me the intestinal problems that Fiber One’s bar started causing me.
Nutritional value for one bar: 130 calories, 5 grams fat, 9 grams fiber. There are only 5 bars in the box which I thought was a little cheap compared to the normal 6 bars a box. Kellogg’s also offers a Chocolate Chip variety of this bar. I didn’t see that at Meijer but like I said it was like someone just dropped off one box.
This isn’t a daily kind of food. I think it is a good replacement for that occasional candy bar when you need a chocolate fix.

I don’t get the intestinal problems from the Fiber One bars…so I tend to go for the Fiber One (Oats & Chocolate) when I am craving a chocolate bar. Maybe for something different, I might try these one day.

If I’m craving a sweet treat–like a candy bar–I buy the Slim Fast Optima Snack bars the crispy peanut caramel ones!! They are 120 calories, 15 vitmins and minerals, 4 grams fat, 1 gram fiber, 1 gram protein. I put them in the fridge which makes the caramel hard and it makes it take forever to eat as you can only nibble a little off at a time. They are less than $4 for a box of 6 at walmart. My other choice are the Snickers Marathan bars. Some are snack size and some are full size protein bars with like 22 grams of proteiin in them. The ones I like best are the chewy peanut butter ones (even though I’m not crazy about peanut butter) and the dark chocolate ones. They run about $4-6 per box depending on the size. Again I put them in the fridge so they get hard and it takes a long time to eat. Sometimes, I can’t eat the whole thing of the big ones.
I’ve found that I need to increase protein and fruits in my diet. I’ve found a great protein powder at the nutrition store but it’s kind of expensive. I need to put fruit in and make smoothies but fruit is so expensive right now. I already miss my farmer’s market and it’s only January. Thank goodness I’m in SC and will have fresh tomatoes in April!!! Can’t wait. Hope some of these ideas help others out!!

Your blog is pretty interesting to me and your topics are very relevant. I was browsing around and came across something you might find interesting. I was guilty of 3 of them with my sites. “99% of blog owners are doing these five errors”. http://tinyurl.com/7dtdnz9 You will be suprised how fast they are to fix.
