Visualization-A Powerful Tool
Filed under Day to Day by kristen at 8:03 pm on Dec 11 2008
Visualization. I looked up the definition. “To recall or form mental images or pictures”.
I love that definition. I have been working on some positive visualization of my own.
I can see it. I am putting on my running clothes then my shoes. Next I am stretching and warming up my body. Chris & I walk to the corrals. I find my corral and wait. Waiting isn’t easy but it gives me time to look around and take everything in. I hear the gun go off. I slowly make my way to the start line along with the rest of the runners in my corral. Now is the time. The time I have been preparing for and working for. 7 months of training and now is the time. I start off easy making sure that I don’t come out too fast and have my first mile burn me later on. I can see it clearly. I am running. I am feeling good. I get in the groove and go. I can see myself taking in some fluids at the water stations. Feeling good. The running is easier than I thought. I am not worried about my time or any other runners that are passing me. I finish the race and ran the whole thing.
No, I am not crazy. I have seriously been thinking this whole race through. I think of it when I run. When I am on the elliptical, I even go as far as shutting me eyes. Disclaimer: I do NOT recommend shutting your eyes while running. Very bad things may happen.
I remember reading that Larry Bird used visualization growing up. I tried to find the story but came up empty handed. But I think the story goes along the line that as he walked to school, Bird would visualize himself shooting free throws. He would visualize the ball going through the hope. Bird believes that this positive visualization had an impact on his shooting percentage.
So as I am training, I am seeing myself run a successful race. Successful for me is not based on time but on finishing the race. I really believe that this may help me run the entire race. What can it hurt? I do know that I will need all of the help I can get.
I can, I will, I am able. Not just to run this race but to eat healthy and keep the weight off.
On a different note, just a reminder that there is still time left to be entered in to my drawing. Check out my December Contest.

I have used visualization before and it worked. Nothing as good as running a race. Like you said all it can do is help—it sure can’t hurt. Wasn’t there a Will Smith movie about visualization? It was the one with his son. I didn’t see it but saw the previews. Any good motivational speech I’ve ever heard uses visualization. Especially Tony Roberts. I know you can do it!!

you KNOW I am in for this one, Sister.
In all aspects of my life (although I visualized my Toddler healthy and toddling off to moms morning out today so I could work—to no avail
)

Unfortunately, I am no good at visualization. I have tried and tried so many times in the past to no avail. But I am glad to hear that it does work for people.
