Blueberry Greek Yogurt

Filed under Food by kristen at 9:19 am on Dec 08 2008

I have enjoyed Greek Yogurt in the past. Many grocery stores carry it now. My sister, Kerri, told me about Oikos’ 0% Fat Blueberry Greek Yogurt. So I went to Meijer to hunt it down. It is with the other organic yogurt. It looks like a regular yogurt container but one that someone sat on. (short and stubby).:-)

I wasn’t sure what to expect. Greek yogurt tends to be much tarter than “regular” yogurt. I have used Greek yogurt in place of sour cream. I opened the container up and saw that the blueberries were on the bottom. So I stirred it up. Oh my! How creamy. I couldn’t believe how thick and creamy this yogurt is. Super smooth. Delicious! It was very tart so I sprinkled one teaspoon of Splenda in it and mixed it up. Pure Heaven.

I was so impressed with this yogurt. It is a 5.3 ounce countainer. Nutritional information for the entire container: 120 calories, 0 grams fat, 0 grams fiber. It has 13 grams of protein.

I will be buying this again without a doubt. Oikos’ also has a honey version which I will be trying soon when I get back from my trip.

Only downside about this yogurt. Expensive. One cup was just under $2.  So it won’t be something that I eat every day but is a nice treat.

You can cut the cost of buying greek yogurt by buying store brand fat free plain yogurt and putting it in a strainer over night in the fridge. Make sure you put it on top of a bowl to catch the water that comes out of the regular yogurt. I think you’ll be amazed in the morning to see that the end result is a very close duplicate to greek yogurt, sometimes referred to as cheese yogurt using this method. It’s a cost savings of almost half. Enjoy!

Jennifer! Thanks so much. I never knew. I will be trying this as soon as I get a strainer small enough!
    Can’t wait to try it.
