My Longest Run
Filed under Day to Day by kristen at 1:34 pm on Dec 01 2008
To be honest, this morning, I didn’t want to run. I wanted to stay in my PJ’s all day. It is cold and dreary. But I did it. I put on my running shoes. My goal was three miles. I hadn’t run or even worked out since Wednesday so my body was well rested. I got on and felt pretty good for the first 3/4 mile. Then the breathing became a little more difficult. Unfortunately, breathing is necessary anytime but especially when running. This was about the time that Megan had to go potty. It was one of those Mommy-must-assist-potty-breaks. (those of you who have kids will understand) I jumped off the treadmill and ran to the bathroom. The entire time I was asking her to hurry up. I am sure Megan didn’t appreciate my impatience. It would have been super easy to just stop at that point. But instead, I got right back on.
After 1.5 miles, the breathing became easier and then my legs started protesting. They really weren’t that bad but my mind was telling me that it was getting hard. Then Megan again thought she needed to go potty. So I again, jumped off and helped her. But I got right back on. I was determined to get to my 3 mile goal.
Around 2.25 miles, I thought to myself, “Why not try a little more than 3 miles?” Shoot, I had come this far, why not push myself? So I decided to just go 3.25 miles. Only 1 more mile. So I kept going. I was visualizing myself running the mini. Once I hit 2.75 miles, I conned myself in to 3.5 miles. I figured anything after 3 miles was gravy.
I finally stopped at 4 miles. I have never ran that far in my entire life. I couldn’t believe it. That run made me think that I might just be able to run the entire Indy Mini.
It did take me almost an hour to run 4 miles but I did stop a total of three times for quick moments to help Megan. Overall, I am tickled with the outcome. This week is one of those weeks that will be crazy for my training. I doubt I will get anything in on Tuesday and possibly nothing on Wednesday. Thursday isn’t a problem. Friday could be a hurdle. Then Chris & I leave for Vegas on Saturday. Chris is running in the Vegas Half Marathon on Sunday morning. (I checked because I wanted to run a 5K but it is on Saturday morning when we will be flying to Vegas. Big Bummer)
But I did it. I ran 4 miles.

Good for you!! Before long you will be running all kinds of marathons! Early last week when I thought I was walking 1/2 mile I was actually walking 1 mile!! I measured it with my car. It was difficult with my back and leg neuropathy on the trip back and had to make little stops and rests and start again but I never thought I could walk a mile. I did however do some marathon walking while shopping on Friday and Saturday and my back is out right now so I have to take it easy for a couple days and then I want to start walking again. I went to the doctor week before last and with tests and xrays he confirmed my suspensions that I have COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) I knew I had it and am way thankful that I quit smoking 2 years ago. He gave me 2 new inhalers and they seem to help some. I agree–breathing is necessary!!! Keep up the great job and I hope that Chris has an awesome race!!!
