High Fiber Oatmeal

Filed under Food by at 11:25 am on Sep 18 2008

As many of you know, fiber has been the catch word for some time. Everyone is interested in fiber for one reason or another. Quaker has jumped on the band-wagon. They have a new line of instant oatmeal that is “High Fiber”. This oatmeal provides 40% of the daily value needed.

There are 8 packets in the box. I ate one this morning for breakfast. I made mine in the microwave with water. I only cooked it for 1 minute and 30 seconds. I thought it turned out well. I put a splash of milk in mine. I think next time I might add one teaspoon of brown sugar Splenda. It kept me full for several hours.

Nutritional information for one packet is 160 calories, 2 grams fat, 10 grams fiber. I wish we could count all of that fiber when figuring points. LOL.

Quaker also offers a Cinnamon Swirl in the High Fiber line. I picked up the Maple & Brown Sugar. I will probably buy this again. I like to eat oatmeal in the fall & winter. But I do think Steel Cut Oatmeal still holds first place in my heart.

What kind of steel cut oatmeal do you buy and is it instant? I’m also a big oatmeal and malt-o-meal bfast eater!

    Thank you!!!

    Charlotte,
So far I am not brand loyal in my steel cut oatmeal consumption. LOL. If you are from Muncie, I have spotted it at Walmart. Whenever I am close to a Trader Joe’s, I buy Country Choice Irish Style Oats- Steel Cut. It is so much cheaper at Trader Joe’s. If you discover you like SCO and there isn’t a store close that carries it, you can order it from Amazon.com .

They take about 5 minutes to cook. Be on the lookout for my Pumpkin Steel Cut Oatmeal recipe. It was on the old site and was one of the recipes that didn’t get moved over. I will be making it at the beginning of the week and will figure nutritional information.

    Hope that helps!

I have a problem eating instant oatmeal because of the texture. Do you find that the steel cut oatmeal has a different texture than the instant?

    Thanks!

    Marsha-
SCO has a totally different texture. It is much chewier and not paste-like. It is still creamy. You should try it.
    Hope that helps.
