Watch Those Portion Sizes

Filed under Day to Day by at 9:13 pm on Dec 13 2007

I have noticed something recently that I wanted to mention. The size of boneless skinless chicken breasts are crazy. They are huge! Many of the recipes that you find do not list how many ounces of chicken breasts  but the number of chicken breasts. On Weight Watchers, this is a very dangerous practice. I didn’t catch on to this for awhile so I thought I would pass on this tidbit of information.

For example, I just saw a recipe on the WW BB that listed 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts. According to the Complete Food Companion, a  4.5 ounce cooked boneless skinless chicken breast is 3 points. But if you just pull out three chicken breats out of a bag of frozen chicken, these are typically NOT 4.5 ounces each. They weigh MUCH MUCH more. So a general rule of thumb that I follow is for each chicken breast that a recipe calls for, I use 4 ounces of chicken breast.

Recently when I was cooking, I weighed one of the chicken breasts to see how much it actually weighed. It was 9 ounces for ONE boneless skinless chicken breast. So if you don’t watch the weight of the chicken that you are using, you could be accidentally increasing your points without even knowing it.

Just didn’t want you to make the same mistake that I had been making.
